How to Stop Being a Victim
I used to blame others for what was happening in my life. I would ask myself "why is this happening to me, what did I do?" I felt powerless and like a constant victim of my life.
Then one day, I woke up and realized that
when I blamed someone or something else, I had no power to change anything.
So I started taking ownership where I could and my life began to change.
Many of us want to change or experience a change in our lives, but we aren't willing to look at our responsibility for the situation we are in. Instead, we would rather blame others.
Here's the truth......
We are responsible for the situations we are dealing with, in some capacity, even if it is just our attitude about what is happening in our life. If we want to experience change, we have to be willing to take ownership of the stories we've been telling ourselves about our past and all of our experiences. Taking ownership isn't easy, it's tough and we all get dirty, because it requires that we take a good hard look at how we are contributing to our current situation. It shows us our areas of improvement and where we may need to seek out some support. This is harder because of our own perceptions of what each of these things means....
- If I have areas of improvements then I'm not perfect and there is something wrong with me.....
- If I need to see out support then maybe I am weak and there is something wrong with me.....
Believing something is wrong with us because we have areas of improvement or need to seek out help is just part of our own self rejection and the work of our inner critic telling us we aren't good enough. So, what can we do?
Own it and honor it as part of where we are at right now, then and only then can we change our perception about these things. Remember,
the stories we tell ourselves contribute to the ways we hold ourselves back.
Now in my life:
- When I find areas of improvement, I am like "thank god I don't have to be perfect." And I remind myself that I am still learning and growing everyday.
- When I find myself needing help/support, I think "seeking support lightens the burdens I carry and the work I am doing, which frees me up to enjoy my life more. Plus I have more time for fun stuff."
Look at what stories you are telling yourself and explore how they may be what is really holding you back from living the life of your dreams. Remember,
taking ownership, while scary, is incredibly rewarding because it gives us the power to change our lives and we can't get that by blaming others.
Want to try taking some ownership in your life, well then grab your journal or a piece of paper and answer these questions:
- What is one situation where you have been assigning blame to someone or something else?
- How can you take ownership in that situation? What is your part in the situation?
The only thing we can truly change is ourselves and we do that by taking ownership of our shit!
